Professor Dan Ariely visits Google's Mountain View, CA headquarters to discuss his book "Predictably Irrational: The Hidden Forces That Shape Our Decisions." This event took place on July 1, 2008, as part of the Authors@Google series. In a series of illuminating, often surprising experiments, MIT behavioral economist Dan Ariely refutes the common assumption that we behave in fundamentally rational ways. Blending everyday experience with groundbreaking research, Ariely explains how expectations, emotions, social norms, and other invisible, seemingly illogical forces skew our reasoning abilities. Not only do we make astonishingly simple mistakes every day, but we make the same types of mistakes, Ariely discovers. We consistently overpay, underestimate, and procrastinate. We fail to understand the profound effects of our emotions on what we want, and we overvalue what we already own. Yet these misguided behaviors are neither random nor senseless. They're systematic and predictable—making us predictably irrational. Dan Ariely is the Alfred P. Sloan Professor of Behavioral Economics at MIT, where he holds a joint appointment between MIT's Media Laboratory and the Sloan School of Management. He is also a researcher at the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston and a visiting professor at Duke University. Ariely wrote this book while he was a fellow at the Institute for Advance Study at Princeton.

Are Americans irrational when it comes to politics -- voting against their own interests? Or is this phenomenon a function of the interaction between mind, politics and society? George Lakoff is a New York Times bestselling author and his new book, The Political Mind: Why You Can't Understand 21st Century American Politics with an 18th Century Mind, will be released May 2008.

Visit this link and read this excellent essay on Atheism by Calvinist philosopher and theologian Dr. Gordon H. Clark: http://www.trinityfoundation.org/journal.php?id=50 Atheism is not known for logical consistency. Almost all atheists today are entirely devoted to empirical epistemology, scientific method, and the verification principle. Never mind that the history of philosophy has demonstrated time and again that all empirical epistemological attempts have always ended in complete skepticism, for these atheists, truth is probability and logic/evidence is only that which can be sensed. Not only is certainty cast to the wind, but logic, the art of necessary inference, is replaced with courses like 'probability and statistics' and something called "practical reasoning." This is one reason our college graduates today do not have the capacity to detect basic fallacies (formal and informal) in basic argumentation. This is also why our society is returning to the Dark Ages. Any society that can not argue logically from the Bible alone, as Martin Luther so clearly demonstrated in the 16th century, is doomed to the superstition of Medieval Catholicism. However, some atheists are better trained in logic than others, and they sometimes make use of their logic when criticizing rival atheists. In this video I quote atheist author David Ramsay Steele, who clearly points out the absurd propaganda of today's popular atheists (such as Richard Dawkins and Christopher Hitchens). It is always interesting to see one atheist accuse another of irrationalism. Atheism is doomed to an irrational world-view. This is why the Bible correctly identifies the atheist as a fool: "The fool hath said in his heart, there is no God" (Psalm 14).

Irrational Thinking Skeptics Rational thinking is defined as thinking that is consistent with "known facts." Irrational thinking is thinking that is inconsistent with (or "unsupported by) known facts."

Access full lesson containing this video at: http://www.yourteacher.com/prealgebra/rationalandirrationalnumbers.php Students learn that the following number sets represent rational numbers: natural numbers, whole numbers, integers, fractions, terminating decimals, and repeating decimals. For example, -2, 7, 3/4, 0.0006, and 0.191919... are all rational numbers. However, a decimal that is both non-terminating and non-repeating is an irrational number. For example, 0.12579835781... and 39.779778776775... are irrational numbers.

WATCH PARTS 1,2 FIRST. MORE NOTES LATER - Will the character of Luke be ruined like Lily was? In this episode, he and Casey play dirty politics -- reminiscent of Watergate. And much like Lily, Luke only sees black and white, but not shades of gray. Kevin turns out to be quite a mature and noble character. Too bad he felt betrayed by Alison. Silly attack ads like the video are an accepted part of the election game. Kevin is right; it just makes him look bad. That's because it's out in the open. On the other hand, taking down posters and infiltrating the enemy (like Watergate) are secretive and unethical. Unlike the silly video, voters don't know Casey/Ali's actions so they can't make an informed choice. That's why what Casey is doing, spurred by Luke's "It's all about winning" attitude, is worse than the homophobic video. 4:05 - Casey: "Ready to get wasted?" Dumb stupid goofy Casey! If they think that the anti-Luke video was bad, just wait until they see a video of UNDERAGED 20 y/o Casey getting drunk. Would people really want a drunk and lawbreaker as part of their candidate's team? At worst, Casey can be arrested and expelled. Pretty bad since he's still on probation from his last crime. Imagine the embarrassment to his mom, Chief of Police Margo Hughes. Poor Brian is frustrated with Luke. In the previous episode, he tried to embezzle foundation money to support Noah's film festival. You can't do that without board approval. Donors gave money thinking that it was a sick children's charity so you can't change focus at will. Without Brian's guidance, Luke will soon be visited by the IRS and FTC for using the foundation (which is tax-exempt) as his private piggy bank (which is not tax-exempt). Today's episode was all about Nuke or Lucinda/Brian. Nuke's parts are 27 mins long! I hope to upload it within an hour.

A clip about homeopathic medicine, taken from part two of the documentary series, "The Enemies of Reason", with Richard Dawkins.

FOX Toledo Hardcore Sports Director Brad Fanning is back with another address to the Irrational Buckeye Nation as Ohio State prepares to take on USC at the Coliseum.

I don't know what the writers are planning, but they're making Luke into quite an irrational jerk -- following in the footsteps of his mom, Lily. In recent months, he's done things that are unfair, irrational, destructive or morally wrong. The issues: outing Noah to the military, accusing Noah of not being a boyfriend because they haven't had sex (which is Luke and Henry's fault!), being unfairly harsh on Holden while coddling destructive Lily, and now hating Brian. Luke may turn out to be correct (i.e. poisonous mushrooms can be used for murder), but so far Luke has no more proof than homophobe who doesn't want gays around their children. On the plus side, Luke has a great new haircut! 0:15 - Brian: "Luke who pulled it all together" Brian has been nothing but diplomatic and logical. Remember that he was hired to maximize the foundation's finances, not to affirm Luke's sexuality 0:30 - Luke: "Unless I do...something supergay" Luke is such a jerk. Like Lily, he inappropriately brings up topics that are best discussed elsewhere. Watch how uncomfortable Noah looks. When Noah was honest with Luke, Luke attacked him, accusing him of being closeted. Watch Luke's face. Van is an amazing actor, converying seething resentment 0:40 - Luke: "Yet somehow, I'm still offended" Well, if Luke chooses to be offended, that's Luke's problem, not Brian's. LUKE IS A JERK. HE IS SO MUCH LIKE THE NEW DYSFUNCTIONAL LILY. Brian did nothing wrong and should not have apologized at all 0:52 - Luke: "My grandmother has had a lot more experience... she doesn't have a problem with me being gay" But did Lucinda do non-profits? No. Brian knows more, and as someone who has worked in non-profits all my life, I agree with Brian. Brian hasn't indicated that he is personally against Nuke being gay 1:01 - Noah: "getting pass this" The only one who won't move on is Luke (just like Lily!). Luke is so blinded with hatred that he can't see how uncomfortable he makes others feel. Love Van's evil face 1:13 - I'm all for handholding and affectionate kisse but it looks like Luke is purposely trying to annoy Brian -- and using Noah to do it. Again, like Lily 2:00 - For those who've forgotten, Noah was late for a lunch with his dad and Maddie so Luke helped him with his tie. That led to their first kiss. "Windsor" is the knot some men use to tie their ties 4:00 - Luke looks great in VERTICAL stripes, and Noah looks great in peach 4:25 - Luke: "I did and he blew it" WHAT??? Did I miss an episode? Luke is a boss from hell. I couldn't work for someone that won't let me offer honest advice. Lucinda: "he made a mistake." No, Brian did not. 4:41 - Luke: "this guy will do anything to get what he wants" Like Lily, Luke is linking everything to support his irrational hatred. Luke is selfish and destructive, refusing to consider Lucinda's happiness. At the very least, Luke should just shut up until he has real evidence. Lucinda should seriously get tough with Luke like she did with Lily, Holden and Emma 5:24 - "Something is not right" I bet the writers will make Luke correct but so far Luke has no reasons for this witchhunt. Either the writers are doing a bad job or Luke is a jerk. Sadly, Luke's "logic" is also the basis of racism and homophobia -- hating and fearing people for no definable reason 5:40 - "Hardy Boys style" The Hardy Boys were popular detective books for teens in the 1950's. The Boys was brothers who solved crimes. I wrongly predicted that Nuke would be the Hardy Boys when Lily was accused of being the "syringe murderer" several months ago. The Boys were played by teen idols Shaun Casidy and Parker Stevenson in the 80's: http://www.imdb.com/media/rm846108672/tt0075513 5:47 - "called every number" What Luke is doing is actually illegal. You can check references BEFORE hiring someone. Afterwards, it become HARRASSMENT. Brian can technically sue Luke at this point 6:14 - Noah: "Can I get you something to drink?" Look at the hateful look Luke gives Noah. What an asshole. Luke is so hateful that he disapproves of Noah being civil 6:51 - Luke: "older wealthy women" That is insulting to Lucinda 7:09 - Brian: "come with us" Uh-oh, many have died eating poisonous mushrooms. Will Nuke be victims of Brian? 7:48 - "I KNOW that Brian guy is up to something" Luke needs to look up the definition of "know" 8:04 - Luke: "he wanted me to go back in the closet" WRONG. He told Luke the truth about philanthropy, and it was up to Luke to take or ignore his advice. Moronic Luke is mixing up many issues because of his hatred. This closet thing, for example, has nothing to do with dating/cheating Lucinda 8:23 - Luke: "sex inches" This is obvious sex talk because most mushrooms are not 6 inches. The penis is often said to have a "mushroom head" because of the glans. "Bag one of those suckers" -- er, a condom might work!
