I teach guitar at Berry College in Rome, Georgia: www.berry.edu At the end of the Christopher Parkening master class held in Bozeman, Montana participants vote for performers to represent the class in a public recital. Here is a clip from my performance in the 1998 master class recital. Brazilian composer Heitor Villa-Lobos (1887-1959) was the prolific composer of around 2000 works. His compositions for guitar are considered an important addition to the guitar's repertoire. Etude No.8 is from his Twelve Studies written for the guitar in 1929 and published in 1952. The melody of Etude No. 8 first appears in the bass, evoking the cello, and then appears in the upper register with arpeggio accompaniment. I hope you enjoy the music.

http://www.mediaed.org Beyond the Frame: Alternative Perspectives on the War on Terrorism This DVD compilation offers a series of stand-alone interviews with some of the most prominent scholars, experts, and activists in political and social thought that critique mainstream media's coverage of the war on terrorism. This accessible format is designed to allow educators to bring the voices of these cultural analysts directly into their classrooms. Launched in September 2001, Beyond the Frame is a series of interviews with leading scholars, experts, and activists offering alternative perspectives on the 9/11 tragedy and its aftermath. Originally a web-only project, the interviews were(and continue to be) available free of charge via streaming video through MEF's website. The project was a response to MEF's alarm at the dangerously restricted range of views presented by the mainstream media, largely confined to the opinions of political elites and a commercial frame dependent on advertisers and ratings. Featuring some of the most prominent names in political and social thought, the site has been accessed to date by tens of thousands of people seeking alternatives to mainstream media coverage in a post-9/11 world. Created in response to educator requests, the DVD will allow these interviews to be shown in the classroom. Featuring Interviews with: Seth Ackerman, Belquis Ahmadi, Joan Blades, Maliha Chishti, Noam Chomsky, Jo Commerford, Kevin Danaher, Cynthia Enloe, Henry Giroux, Janine Jackson, Robert Jensen, Sut Jhally, Darryl Kimball, Michael Kimmel, Mhahsa Khanbabai, Naomi Klein, Manning Marable, Mark Crispin Miller, Bernie Sanders, Ritu Sharma, Vandana Shiva, and Alisa Solomon.

I teach guitar at Berry College in Rome, Georgia: www.berry.edu This Giga is the last movement of Guido Santorsola's Three Airs of Court. As the title of the work suggests this is a neo-classical piece forming a mini three movement Baroque suite. Born in Italy in 1904, Guido Santorsola went to Brazil with his family when he was five years old" Raised and educated in Sao Paulo, Brazil, he studied violin and viola, later establishing himself as one of the finest violists in Latin-America. Santorsola graduated in music in the "Conservatorio Dramatico e Musical de Sao Paulo" and later in the Trinity College of Music (London), In the early 1930s he moved to Montevideo, Uruguay. Three Airs of Court is a lot of fun to play and is a great addition to the guitar's repertoire. I happened across the score while digging through old LP's at a thrift store in my hometown of Great Falls, Montana. There was a stack of music next to the LP's, which I assumed was old piano music. Upon looking closer I saw that it was a stack of classical guitar music! I purchased a six-inch stack of scores for about 50 cents. I hope you enjoy the music!

This performance of Guárdame Las Vacas by Luys de Narváez (c. 1500 -- 1560) is from a recital I gave in Athens, Georgia, on 4/28/2008. This work is one of the earliest examples of a theme and variation. The theme to Guárdame is a popular Renaissance tune based on the Romanesca chord progression. The title (Watch My Cows) and flowing compound meter also demonstrate an early example of instrumental music evoking a pastoral setting. Narváez published two separate sets of variations based on this theme using slightly different chord progressions. I've included one variation from the second publication, played an octave lower on the repeat, ala Segovia. I hope that you enjoy the performance. I teach guitar at Berry College in Rome, Georgia: www.berry.edu This is the third and final clip from the Tuesday Music Club recital that I played in Great Falls, Montana, way back in 1994. This was probably my first public recital on the classical guitar out side of a university setting. As you can see from the nativity scene it was December and I had just finished my first semester as a guitar major at the University of Georgia studying with John Sutherland. Fernando Sor (1778-1839) was one of the guitar's greatest composers. He wrote over four hundred pieces for the guitar as well as opera, ballet and other musical genres. Sor's compositional style is similar to that of Haydn and Mozart. This short, lyrical piece has been used as background music in commercials and is one of Sor's more popular studies. This piece was originally published in Sor's set of twenty-four exercises Opus 35. Today it is better known as Estudio 5 due to Segovia's publishing of twenty Sor studies in 1945. This is a beautiful piece of music and I hope that you enjoy the performance.

I teach guitar at Berry College in Rome, Georgia: www.berry.edu Luys de Narvaes' (c.1500-1560) Cancion del Emperador (Song of the Emperor) is actually based on Josquin Desprez's (c.1440-1521), vocal composition Mille Regretz (A Thousand Regrets). It was common practice for vihuela, Spain's version of the lute, composers to set popular songs of the day for their instrument. This is primarily how the tradition of playing solo instrumental music was begun. Supposedly the favorite song of the Holy Roman Emperor, Charles V, Narvaes named his version The Emperor's Song in homage. A translation of the original text reads "A thousand regrets in leaving you and going far from your loving face. I have great grief and grievous pain, so that soon people will see me end my days." This piece exemplifies the guitar's ability to handle multi voice textures and, as can be expected, the music reflects the deep sentiment of the lyric. My studio recording of this piece is on my debut CD, Music for the Guitar, available through my web site: www.enloeguitarstudio.com. This clip is taken from a 2003 recital in the Weaver room at the Emerson Center for the Arts and Culture in Bozeman, Montana (www.theemerson.org). Setting up and playing this recital was a bizarre experience... Just look at that backdrop! A traditional Irish band was performing in another hall the same time as I. Ten minutes before I was to begin playing Bagpipes started bellowing right under the open windows of my venue. Neither the audience nor myself knew how long they were going to go and fortunately they stopped right when I was to begin playing. All in all the performance when pretty well, and my friend Eric Hyppa brought his video camera so now I can share this video with you. Thanks for watching!

This performance of Etude 11 is taken from a concert that I gave at Max Noah Recital Hall at Georgia College and State University in Milledgeville, Georgia on 4/23/2008. Etude 11 is truly guitar music. The contrasting middle section of this work is one of the few instances of guitar music that would be nearly imposable to execute faithfully on the piano. I had a lot of fun at this performance: the audience was great. Please enjoy! I teach guitar at Berry College in Rome, Georgia: www.berry.edu. J.K. Mertz's (1806 -- 1856) Sehnsucht, or Longing, is from Bardenklänge (Bardic Sounds), Op. 13, a collection of twenty-five character pieces published in 15 volumes. Sehnsucht is from Vol. 10. Beyond vividly evoking a specific mood, this work demonstrates excellent thematic development as the opening bass motive is transformed throughout the piece. This selection is part of a performance/masterclass that I gave for the guitar studio at Reinhardt College in Waleska, Georgia on 04/18/2008. Thanks for listening! So a group of us performed Poor Child from the Wild Party (lippa Verison) at our high school's drammy performance, which is basically a recognition for our seniors. Alejandro La Rosa (Junior) was Burrs Terrance Johnson (Senior) was Black Allison Bonner (Junior) was Queenie Austin Pryfogle (Senior) was Kate and i make up one note during the songs so don't mind that. besides my own little fault and Terrance's re-ordering of words, it was a really good performance and we were all proud of it also Andre Cerullo was a accompianist in keyboard
